The Story of Saipan & the Northern Mariana Islands
The Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) are a vibrant archipelago in the western Pacific Ocean, located about 1,500 miles east of the Philippines and 3,500 miles west of Hawaii.
Our island chain has been home to the Chamorro and Carolinian people for thousands of years—skilled navigators and storytellers who lived in harmony with the land and sea.
A History of Resilience
Throughout history, the Marianas have seen many chapters.
In the 16th century, Spanish explorers arrived, naming the islands “Las Islas de los Ladrones.”
Later, the islands were claimed by Germany in the late 1800s, then by Japan after World War I under a League of Nations mandate.
During World War II, Saipan became the site of a pivotal battle in 1944, a turning point in the Pacific.
After the war, the United States administered the islands, and in 1986, the CNMI became a U.S. Commonwealth, proudly preserving our culture, language, and traditions.
